About Me

I fully enjoy teaching music and theater to others and spreading the art of performance, reaching out to all generations. I believe in customizing every lesson to be unique for my students in a way that will serve their individual needs. I teach with patience and encouragement and believe that students prosper and improve much more from a positive experience. My lessons are intended to be fun and influential in a positive light that can lead to a rewarding career, hobby, or just for personal enjoyment!

Every since I was a little girl, I have been devoted to the arts. When I began college, I knew that music was my path. As a music major I developed a deeper understanding of music theory, piano, voice, and theater. I received my A.A. in Music at College of the Desert and my Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Redlands- which I attended on a music scholarship. I have played leading roles in several operas and musicals in Southern California, including Gianni Schicchi, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme (DTL nominee), The Impresario, The Grand Duke, Patience (DTL award), Cosi fan tutte, Little Women the Musical, Seussical the Musical, and many more. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a singer at churches, restaurants, and in pop bands. I continue to perform and study music because performing is a part of who I am and I could never live without it.

With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. I truly believe that if someone wants something out of life then they WILL achieve it with dedication, perseverance, confidence, and by having FUN doing it!

About Me

I am primarily a composer, guitarist, tenor, pianist and percussionist and I love sharing what I have learned with others and watching my students develop and grow. My goal is to teach my students until they are better than me, so I hold no secrets, tricks or techniques back and I devote my time and energy to help others become the best musicians, artists and people they can be.I have a BA in music composition and a BA in music history, both from California State University, San Bernardino. I play the guitar, bass, piano, drums, orchestral percussion, mandolin, ukulele, banjo, recorder, harmonica and didgeridoo with varying levels of proficiency and have experience in music theory, songwriting, recording, MIDI, arranging, singing (contemporary, broadway and opera), and acting/performing. I have performed in The United States, Austria, Spain, Australia and New Zealand and have 13 years of experience, development, mistakes and successes to offer my students. I love learning new things and have been teaching as a profession since 2007. I am also First Aid & CPR certified, Live Scan fingerprinted, FBI background checked, Safe Environment trained and a Child Abuse Mandated Reporter.

*** Lesson Details ***
I do not use a set curriculum. I prefer to discuss goals and music with my students and their parents to determine what genres, styles and techniques they are most interested in. I then use techniques I have gained through experience along with songs and classical exercises to develop strong technique, a developed ear and the ability to read music. I do expect students to be disciplined, practice regularly, and be prepared for lessons, enabling them to expect the same from me. Whether a student wants to be a classical virtuosi or learn how to play a song they heard on the radio, I will keep the lessons fun and interesting for anyone willing to practice and learn, and I will always to my best to cater to the student's individual needs and goals.

I provide all copies of music, handouts, exercises, etc. Students are expected (when applicable) to have an instrument in good, working condition.

I form all of my lessons around being able to learn, memorize and play songs, read written musical notation (along with sight-reading & technical exercises), and improvisation (based on scales and exercises).

For guitar and it's relatives (bass, mandolin, ukulele, banjo) I can teach any style or genre of music, including modern tapping techniques, and I also teach TAB notation.

I teach both classical and popular piano, usually combining classical sight reading exercises while learning both classical and popular repertoire.

I have experience acting and singing on stage in both non-musical and musical productions, as well as five years of classical vocal experience singing in high school and collegiate ensembles. Being in these environments has equipped me with the tools and exercises to be able to teach everything from basic singing to fundamentals in broadway and opera.

I also have a small studio in my home where I write and record, providing me with the opportunity to also teach recording, songwriting and music theory.

Acclaimed by the LA Times as a soloist Kan has been a concertmaster in various orchestras, as Shanghai Youth Symphony Orchestra, Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and MJD International Symphony Orchestra, she has collaborated with numerous renowned musicians, including Seiji Ozawa, Mstislav L. Rostropovich, Lang Lang, Yundi Li, and Josep Carreras among others. Kan earned Bachelorƒ¢‚€‚™s Degree from Shanghai Conservatory of Music, China, where she studied with Professor Ding Zhi Nuo. Currently, she is the concertmaster of Azusa Pacific University Orchestra, and a student of Artist Certificate Programme under Professor Charles Stegeman on full scholarship.

She received her bachelor's degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she studied under Professor Ding Zhi Nuo. To further pursue her music career, Kan came to study in the United States on full scholarship at Azusa Pacific University, where she received the Artist Certificate Program Diploma in 2010. Meanwhile, she served as concertmaster for the Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra. Kan studied under professor Charles Stegeman, and recently obtained her Music Performance masters.

*** Lesson Details ***
First, I need to talk to my students about their goals. Not only for the adult, teacher also need to know what kids want to know about music. They are interested in it sometimes, they just don't know. Second, I will let them know, interests is just the first step. If you want to learn, you have to pay! Pay your patient, and your endeavor. I will teach in some specific ways to motive students to approach the goals. for example: listen, singing, playing, reading is the process to make the students catch the goal faster without lost their interests! So involve more activities in the lessons is very important! Also, serious technique practice is necessary. As I mentioned before, not only interests, if you want to learn , you have to pay. Once you catch your goal, you will feel happy that the teacher has been pushed you for some boring finger exercise.
