Andres M. Georgetown, TX

About Me

Hi there, my name is Andres. I have been playing drums and percussion for 13 years. I studied music at Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, initially studying Drums and Latin Percussion, and eventually majoring in Orchestral Percussion. I have performed with most of Puerto Rico’s major orchestras as well as with smaller percussion, jazz, Latin and rock ensembles. I enjoy teaching a lot, and have been doing so for the last 6 years.

Weather you like orchestral music, jazz, Latin music, rock, funk, or any other style, I can help you get there on your drums, congas, timbales, marimba, vibraphone or timpani. I’m perfectly fluent in Spanish, so if you need a Spanish speaking teacher, look no further!

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope we get to work together soon!

*** Lesson Details ***
On the first lesson you will set short and long term goals you would like to achieve on your playing, and I will then design a lesson plan to achieve those goals. From there on each lesson will be a fun and challenging workshop in which I will help you gain technique and musicality in your favorite music styles, always working toward your goals. Each lesson generally starts off with some assigned work from the previous lesson and then we move on to technique/reading skills exercises. We then work on some new material (rudiments, rhythmic patterns, time signatures, etc.) and we finish off doing some fun stuff like learning new grooves or playing your favorite songs. I will always be stressing out throughout lessons the right way to practice.

I use a variety of methods, depending on the music style covered (jazz, rock, latin, etc) and your skill level. Once we get to know each other on that first lesson we will decide which method suits you best. Some of these are:

Syncopation, by George L Stone
Stick Control, by George L Stone
Modern Reading Text, by Louis Belson
Realistic Rock, by Carmine Appice
The Drummer’s Complete Vocabulary, by John Ramsey
Essence of Afro-Cuban Percussion & Drumset, by Ed Uribe
Primary Handbook for Mallets, by Garwood Whaley

The keys to get as much as you can from each lesson are these: COMMIT to your goals. PRACTICE as much as you can. ALWAYS HAVE FUN while playing. Do that and you will be surprising yourself with great achievements in no time.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide the basics, sticks and mallets and practice pads for the duration of the lessons, but I strongly encourage all students to use their own! I expect every student to have their instrument, and their own sticks, mallets and practice pads for their practice time at home. The student should also be able to get their copy of the methods used on class.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Orchestral Percussion and Latin percussion/drumset. I am also very well prepared to teach music theory at all levels.

Michael F. Austin, TX

About Me

Hi I'm Mike!
I've been playing/teaching drums for over 20 years. I started out playing in Punk and Metal bands. I later got interested in Jazz which led me to the University of North Texas. I graduated there in 99 and boy did I learn a thing or two. Attending such a highly competitive school taught me a few things about learning new concepts and setting goals. I have since adopted a philosophy that yields results and have eliminated the "busy work" approach that most drum teachers use. My main interest is to see my students achieve their dreams!

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a pretty laid back teacher. I let student drive the intensity of the lessons. I have a few set goals that all my students must achieve but it is up to the student to determine how soon they meet them. After 3 months my students will be able to play a handful of songs chosen by them. They will also be able to play rudiments as wells as improvise with them on the kit. After 6 months a student should be able to learn drum parts by ear. At that point my students should also be able to take any memorized beats or fills and "remix" them spontaneously!

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in a separate room which includes 2 drum sets and recording equipment. 1 dog kept separate. Seating available.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The student should provide a permanent space where the drums are located and either a video recorder or hand held audio recorder. The student must also provide a metronome capable of being heard over the drums.

*** Specialties ***
I concentrate on drum set. I teach lots of styles at any level. I encourage learning by ear before I teach reading.

Matt M. Austin, TX

About Me

Matt M. was born in Lowell, Massachusetts and found an interest in music as soon as his mom started playing songs through her belly with headphones and a record player. He moved down to Austin, Texas at the age of three where he continued to experiment with toy pianos and banging pots and pans.

At ten years old he discovered an enthusiasm for guitar and saxophone. Picking up those instruments for a couple of years brought him to playing drum set, jamming with his brother and friends, and listening to all sorts of music. His experience advanced in High School as he enjoyed playing in the jazz band, performing at different venues, and catching concerts.

When he graduated from High School, Matt decided to pursue his devotion towards music and enrolled in The University of North Texas. While attending he developed his craft on saxophone, drums, guitar, and worked on his technique with clarinet, flute, and piano. He also played in various ensembles and lab bands under the direction of Jim Riggs, Stefan Karlsson, and John Murphy.

Receiving a Bachelor's in Music in 2009, he stuck around Denton for a few years where he played in a variety of projects such as Bubba Hernandez y Los Super Vatos, Warren Jackson Hearne and Le Leek Electrique (nominated for best group in The Dallas Observer), and gained more experience in teaching. He currently is living back in Austin where he teaches, works as a freelance musician, and is developing other projects.

*** Lesson Details ***
Students can expect an informative, laid back, and fun environment while taking lessons with me. Depending on their level of expertise I will go over the basics, give them technique exercises that will develop muscle memory, and use music theory references. After 3 months we will improve on sight reading, aural skills, and understanding how to apply music theory to all facets of music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the living room which includes a drum set, music stands, guitars (2), amp, and seating. No pets. Parking on the street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my equipment and expect my students to have their own instruments.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz, rock, blues, and classical music.

Natalie M. Austin, TX

About Me

My name is Natalie McD, I was born in Texas and have been playing music all my life. Music runs in my family, my mother plays the bass, my sister the trombone, my brother the cello, my older sister the oboe, and my grandparents play guitar, mandolin, piano, harmonica, and just about anything else; I've been around all sorts of instruments and know my way around quite a few. Drums is my passion. My mom gave me drum sticks when I was four, and my first Remo practice pad. I play drums in an all female rockabilly band called Danger*Cakes in Austin, Texas and we play shows all over America and hopefully internationally soon. After drums, I'd have to say songwriting is my next biggest passion. Playing acoustic or electric guitar, and some piano, learning mandolin and harmonica, is the best way I find to express myself musically and I've really learned how to use music theory to make a song my own. I've written about 50 songs myself, since I learned how to play guitar in 2006, and have taught myself the other instruments as I needed to for recording purposes as well as song production in general (playing with bands, and other musicians). My mother has been a teacher my whole life, so I've have been in classrooms helping her since I can remember. My first job was at a daycare and I've taught at Girls Rock Camp in Austin and plan on continuing. So teaching, looking after, and definitely entertaining kids is something I feel very comfortable with, as well as any other age, I've taught peers and people older than myself. I love music and I love to have fun.
