I bring a dynamic and multifaceted perspective to the creative exploration of the percussive arts, with over 40 years of diverse musical experience which includes performing with Nigerian master drummer Francis Awe’s Talking Drum Ensemble, competing to top international honors with the Misty Isle Pipe Band, ensembles large and small covering music in a wide range of genres, as well as extended experience in solo accompaniment for modern dance and performance art. I have performed with renowned musicians such as Dave Holland, Albert Mangelsdorf, Bobby Bradford, Fred Katz, Lee Konitz, Don Thompson, Ralph Alessi, Vinny Golia, Karl Denson, Kei Akagi, among many others.

Classically trained with years of performance and practical experience. I know how to help you make the music that you want to make. I am well-versed in nearly all music styles from classical to contemporary/pop. I am currently active in both piano accompaniment, vocal performance with the Pacific Chorale, and directing a very active north orange county community choir.

I recently completed my music credential and have graduate degrees in Education and Music.

I am especially gifted in teaching beginning piano, fundamental vocal production and dramatic presentation.

I am so excited to meet you! I have been performing ever since I can remember, doing talent shows, plays, musical theatre, and even television and film. Music has always been that quiet hum underneath all the noise that life brings. I began coaching vocalists and actors when I was attending Brigham Young University, studying Communications and Music. I found a new love of producing as I have directed and produced multiple musical showcases here in the USA, as well as in some parts of Europe. I have been able to see how the power of music changes lives, and you will experience that too!

Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, when my father would record my brother and I singing. I always loved singing and learned many of my favorite songs as a child.

I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orchestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! As a simple introduction, my name is Roy and I have been a musician and music teacher for over 35 years. Guitar is my principle instrument, although I also teach bass, beginning keyboards and drums.
Starting with my first piano lessons and continuing into college, I studied classical music, musicianship, ear training, and theory. After many years performing in bands and recording music I progressed to jazz theory, sight reading, and improvisation at Dick Grove’s Jazz Workshop in Studio City. I teach all ages and all styles of music including blues, rock, jazz, country, folk, finger-picking, technique, musicianship, ear training, theory, and important tips when playing with others.

PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING

Each student who comes to me is an individual. I customize each lesson, keeping in mind the student’s level of interest, goals, and intent. I put great care into judging when to push, when to pull back, and when to stop altogether and regroup.

Sometimes there is frustration and as a teacher it is very important to take that experience and turn it into a positive learning situation. During the course of a lesson, we’ll take a "breather" and simply talk about the day, or work on material that is enjoyable and instills a sense of self-confidence —anything to release the tension of acquiring a new language-the musical language. My journey with music began in 2004. I started playing guitar and piano while attending College of the Desert. The guitar led me to take several music classes, including guitar ensemble and piano. I soon transferred to Cal Poly Pomona to pursue a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 2005. While attending Cal Poly, I declared a Double Major in Music Performance (Guitar Emphasis) since I enjoyed it so much. I began studying guitar under Dr.Yates (UCLA) and Dr. Gravelle (UCLA). They both inspired me to take the instrument seriously. During my 6 quarters of Private/Studio lessons with Dr. Gravelle, I began learning challenging pieces of different genres (jazz, classical, and bossa nova). I grew up in Quebec City Canada, where I only spoke French during those growing years. From a very young age, I was always attracted to music and particularly playing drums. My mom has told me that before I could even walk, I was already banging away on whatever I could put my hands on. I would sit down with pots, pans, and spoons and bang away. My parents bought my first “real” drum kit when I was about five years old. It was a Mickey Mouse drum set that they ordered from the Sears catalog. I was ecstatic. Unfortunately, because of the poor quality of the drum, this particular kit only lasted a couple months, but it was on that very drum kit that I gave my first live performance. The concert took place in the basement of my house. This memorable concert included one song, a French version of California dreaming, with me on drums, my brother on guitar and my sister as a singer. The crowd (one uncle and our mom) loved it and saw the potential in what could be a career someday!...

Hi! My name is Al! I've been playing drums for about 11 years now, I started playing at the age of 12 when my parents bought me my first drum set. Since then drumming has been my life, everything from playing in numerous bands, drum competitions, private teaching, and National US Tours. Leaving my home town of Brownsville, TX behind, I moved out to L.A Summer of 2008 to attend the Los Angeles Music Academy, where I received my Associates Degree in Music Performance. I currently teach private lessons and I gig around town with various artists. I have lots of musical knowledge that Iv'e obtained by studying with LA's Top Drummers. I'd love to pass down my knowledge only to benefit you in your drum learning experience. If you're just a beginner, only want to take lessons for fun, or more advanced. My passion for music and teaching goes way back when I wrote my first song at age 9 about an American Indian girl- I HAVE NO INDIAN BLOOD IN ME- but somehow I felt a connection- possibly something I learned at school or on TV. That experience- it changed and improved the evolution of my maturing through today. I was able to express my thoughts and facts I have learned through a song! Musical instruments- I played the guitar and piano on that first recording and my voice; and wrote out the lyrics and music notes! It gave me such confidence in myself. I felt I had achieved a great deal and won some educational contests and received great respect from my teachers.

Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. She also benefits her students with an extraordinarily diverse musical background, having worked as a vocalist in gospel, country, musical theater, jazz, classical, rock, pop and soul styles. Her performing career has taken her from L.A. church meetings to London’s Houses of Parliament.

Crystal hails originally from Los Angeles, CA - where her musical parents gave her a head start by including her in the family business the moment she was able to contribute. I am an experienced drumset player and rudimental percussionist. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for percussion with all of my students, and love to see the progress that comes from hard work and determination. I have an extensive background in marching percussion, and I use that knowledge and experience to improve technique and skill on the drums, while not losing sight of the "feel" that is required to properly play. I have been teaching privately for more than 18 years, and have spent 10 seasons with the World Champion Concord Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, both as a performing member and an instructor.
