My specialties are opera, pop, R&B, gospel, worship, choral, conducting, and piano.

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. More recently I've also started teaching online lessons via Skype and Google Helpouts with Take Lessons as well.
Philosophy of Learning
Lessons are generally in a relaxed setting and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.
I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.
Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but I prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible like my older students as well.
I also hold events for all my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have the "Young Musicians Recital" every few months.
Adult students have a weekly "Jam Session Night" that they're welcome to come to whenever they'd like.
Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype as well as do a drop-in lesson through Google Helpouts.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)
*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.
My studio is equipped with:

Broadway Singing, Classical Piano, Classical Voice, Ear Training, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing, Vocal Training
Hi there! I am finishing up my BM at San Jose State University, and have been teaching voice and piano lessons for 4 years. I have over 13 years of experience in music, musical theater, and singing, and 19 years of piano training. My most exciting accomplishment to date is my artist residency with Opera San Jose for the 2014/2015 season. If you'd like more information about my performing career please contact me.
Although my main passion is opera performance I absolutely LOVE to teach as well! I can teach voice to students of all ages and in all styles, and also teach beginning to intermediate piano for all ages.
What I have listed is not true to my actual schedule. I try to keep all my lessons for Sundays, but I do have some weekday afternoons and evenings available. For these weekdays we can schedule lessons on a case by case basis.
I usually like to split the lessons in half: the first half on technique (breathing exercises, posture, body alignment, warm-ups, vowel clarity) and the second half on repertory. I can teach my students to sing in Italian, German, French, Russian, Spanish, Latin, and English. I specialize in operatic singing, but can also offer students who are looking to sing musical theater a solid vocal foundation.
***For voice students under the age of 13 (pre-pubescent) I split my lessons in half between musicianship and singing. The reason I do this is
1) Young voices are simply not physically mature enough yet to begin rigorous training
2) Musicianship skills are equally as important to being a good singer, so why not build a great foundation until they get a little older?
I divide my students into basic, beginning, and intermediate levels.
Basic: We will go through the beginning stages of music theory: notation, rhythm and scales. Repertory will consist mostly of teaching music to develop the students reading, and beginning to develop two hand coordination.
Beginning: With the basics mastered, I will begin to teach my students beginning music theory: major/minor scales, tonal harmony, and more advanced rhythms. At this point I like to start having my students work on easy repertory from the common practice period.
Intermediate: Now we cover all major/minor scales, chromatic harmony, and intermediate repertory from classical to modern traditions.
I teach in the music building of SJSU. We will usually be in the larger classrooms, but if space is limited occasionally I teach out of the smaller practice rooms. I'll meet you at the front of the building always. Sometimes on weekend the building is locked--but have no fear! I have an access card.
If taking a lesson on location I will always have a piano on hand. I do require my students to bring copies of whatever songs or monologues they'd like to work on.
If taking a lesson out of your own home I do require that you own a keyboard for music lessons.
Progress, not perfection!
A good musician listens with an open heart.
Practice, Practice, Practice! (duh!)

I am currently a Vocal Performance/Music Education Student at SJSU. I am a Coloratura Soprano. I have been teaching on and off for the last 2 years. I love to inspire and teach anyone excited about learning something new. I work with both classic and modern music. My voice teacher is Sandra Bengochea who teaches at SJSU, West Valley College, and Stanislas College. I am in my final year and will then be in a Credential Program. I have assisted at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino, CA for the past 5 years in both the choral and drama departments. I have performed in multiple musicals and operas so being able to sing and act is something I am comfortable teaching.
