James' musical journey began in the 3rd grade when he started learning the trumpet. In 5th grade, the trumpet was not available so he started learning the trombone. In 7th grade he started getting private piano lessons and started playing for his church.

In high school James played the xylophone, cymbals and trombone for the jazz ensemble. In college he took some piano classes but ended up tutoring them. While in college,his computer teacher also had written a book called "All Can Play" and taught an extended studies class for beginning piano. When James graduated college, he began teaching the class also at Grossmont and Cuyamaca College.

During all of this time James continued to play for his local church. James was also the music director for several churches and conferences here in San Diego and in Bakersfield. He has now been playing piano for over 20 years. During that time he has always had one or two students taking private lessons but now James has decided to become a full time piano teacher.

Lessons are specifically suited to the individual student goals. James can teach by ear or note. He believes that whether you want play by ear or note, you should have an understanding of music theory. James likes to use books with CD accompaniments. He feels it helps the students timing and gets them used to playing with other instruments. Before he starts teaching a student, he finds out a little about them and what their goals are then fashions the lessons to go that direction.
