About Me

Hello, My name is Gerry.  I am 44 years old and I am known predominantly for being a jazz drummer/ composer/and arranger. As a sideman (non leader),I have had the opportunity and good fortune to work with a who's who in the world of jazz music as well as other styles of music. I have either toured, played gigs or recorded with jazz stars such as:

Terry Gibbs, McCoy Tyner, Alice Coltrane, Larry Coryell, Joe Henderson, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Hubert Laws, Dewey Redman, Clark Terry, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Sam Rivers, John Abercrombie, David"Fathead"Newman, Ravi Coltrane, Brad Mehldau, Gary Bartz, Steve Turre, James Carter, Dave Liebman, Steve Allen, Joe Lovano, Billy Childs, Buddy Defranco, Patrice Rushen, Hubert Laws, Jon Hendricks, Reggie Workman. Joey Defrancesco, Ernie Watts, Mulgrew Miller, Milt Hinton, Kenny Kirkland, Jay McShann, Don Pullen, Benny Maupin, Eddie Harris and many more.

I also have had show experience working with people like the pioneer of late night talk show Steve Allen.

I started my Solo career, still maintaining my sideman career in 1992 in NYC. My own group headlined at the famous now de funked Village Gate Jazz club 25 times, doing 1 week engagements from 1992 to 1995. I also ran the after hours jazz jam session at the world famous Bluenote jazz club in NYC. from 1991 to 1997 off and on during those 6 years. In 1995 I signed my first record deal with Quincy Jones and his record label Qwest/Warner. The record was produced by Quincy Jones and Drummer/Producer Stix Hooper, who played drums and co-produced most of the legendary Crusaders albums. Not only did I play drums and lead my sextet feat saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, but I also composed 8 of the 10 songs on the CD and arranged every song. Since then I have recorded 6 more solo CD's of my different bands. All my records since my first have been produced by myself. I also have written the majority of the music and arranged the majority of the music on my last 6 CD's .2 of those CD's will be released on 2 different labels this year. One in late June and the other in late November of 2008.I moved back to Los Angeles a little over a year ago to stay off the road and spend time with my family who live here in Los Angeles. I work as a jazz musician playing gigs at night and teaching in the day. To even learn more about my music as well as to hear my music and learn more about my career in music, you may go to my my space page

 Thank you, Gerry

Lesson Details

I have had the opportunity to many clinics in coleges, and high schools all over america. The New School and Eastman in New York as well as Cal Arts and Cal State Fullerton are just a few of the colleges that I have been invited to be a clinition. Clinics included everything from working with drummers to working with whole rhythem sections. i also  have worked with jazz trios to jazz octets as well as conducting and instructing big bands. While living in NYC from1987 to 2006 I had many private students. I taught all ages from 5 to 60 years old. I also many times donated my time to work and teach music to the mentally challenged.

Working with so many people in so many  different styles of music has given me the for sight to be able to identify immediately what it is that any particular student (no matter what level )and help them to continue to progress achieving the the goals and directions in music that they are going for. I also, because of my vast experience of playing different styles of music can also help as well inspire students to move into new desired directions in music. No student is, and can ever be treated with the same formula. Students that even play on the same level with the same direction in where they want to go in music cannot be treated with the same formula. This is where all the music I have learned and have been part comes into play when teaching each unique and individual student.

As a drum teacher working with children, I have some unique ways of even teaching children who have never read music before to slowly learn how to read drum music.I also with students use videos from my vast collection as well as coping CD's from my collection of about 10,000 for the student when needed.

If a student studies at my studio also when needed I use recording  equipment that I keep set up in my studio to record lessons so that the student can hear and listen over and over to the lesson to improve what it is that we are working on.The reason why I dont make generic recorded CD's to pass on to all students is as I have stated before, each student cannot be treated the same. One of the issues I have had in my past as a young drummer was to get with a teacher that had the same program for each individual student. When studying with me we will develope our own individual musical relationship together.

Specialties

I have a very strong talent to suss out a student very quickly and teach them how to improve, find new ideas and perfect what it is that their goals are. If it is a child I have a very fun and silly personality and can keep them very motivated to advance. I teach out of my fiance's/girlfriends home which I will be moving into next year. I have 3 drum sets set up as well as recording equipment which all lessons and projects can be professionally recorded to help students hear themselves. If I have really advance students I can help lead them through my gigging, touring, recording as well as writing to help them advance what it is that they are trying to do... I am not trying to get them to do what I do.... I help them find themselves..
