Hay Ling’s early musical training came primarily from Ms. Grace Janice Tseng who is an honor graduate of The Royal Schools of Music, London and prizes winner of various piano competitions in Hong Kong. At age 16, Hay Ling earned her Certificate of Merit in Grade 8 Piano from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Hay Ling was the prize winner of the piano solo competitions of The Annual Hong Kong Schools’ Music and Speech Festival during 1998-99 and 2000-01.
After one semester of study in piano performance with Dr. Alejandor Sabre, a student of Irene Schreier, Rebecca Penneys, and Steven Laitz and an DMA receiver from The Eastman School of Music, Hay Ling was nominated with various scholarships including the Dr. Leroy Gilson Memorial Scholarship, Lena & Jules Peron Scholarship, Robert Hamilton Memorial and Modesto Junior College’s Friends of Music Club Scholarship.
During 2005-06, Hay Ling frequently performed with the Modesto Community Orchestra and the Modest Junior College Chamber Music Ensemble. Among the same time, Hay Ling was invited to be a piano accompanist for the MJC Voice Program and a piano/music tutor at MJC, where Hay Ling worked as a piano accompanist for major voice classes and assisted voice and piano students on their music studies. Later, Hay Ling was also invited to be a teacher assistant at MJC music program where she continuously tutored music students on musicianship and music theory.
During 2006, Hay Ling received the Beatrice Colton Scholarship, Shirley Woodward Piano Scholarship, Robert Hamilton Scholarship, and California Music Teachers Association Scholarship. At the same time, she received scholarships from CSU Northridge Music Program and continued her study in music therapy at CSU Northridge at the same year.
Hay Ling is a current member of Sigma Alpha Iota (International Music Fraternity for Women), the America Music Therapy Association, and the Music Teacher Association of California.
Piano: for beginners, I use a lot of materials by Francis Clark (e.g. music tree), Suzuki, Alfred series, Bastien Piano method, Carson, Emonts, Gillock, Glover, Thompson, Faber & Faber. I use Bastien and Pace methods for older beginners.
I'm trained classically yet I teach music of many different genres. I teach music of all generes and specialize in teaching accompaniment and sight reading techniques.
