Sharnell has taught music in Buckeye, Arizona public schools since 2002. She is very excited to start teaching privately through takelessons.com.
Sharnell grew up in the west valley in a little town called Tonopah, AZ (she likes to call it "East LA") and started playing the flute in 1989. When she got to high school, music and theatre became the main focal point of her life.
As a member of marching and concert band, jazz band, concert and show choir, jazz choir, and drama club, Sharnell's parents started to forget what she looked like because she spent very little time at home. By her senior year, she was the President of the Drama Club, the Head Drum Major of the Marching Band, 1st chair flute in concert band, and was also a charter member (and 1st President) of the school's chapter of the Tri-M Honor Society for Music. As a 1997 graduate, she was sure that she wanted to pursue a career that was centered around the arts.
She began to attend Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona in the Fall of 1997 and soon settled on majoring in Music Education - both choral and instrumental (despite being told it would be nearly an impossibility). She double-majored through her junior year, taking private lessons in both flute and voice.
Throughout her time at NAU, she was a member of many performing groups on campus, including: Shrine of the Ages Choir, Women's Chorale, Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Lumberjack Band, and Flute Ensemble. She was also a resident in Campbell Honor Hall from 1999-2001, serving as its Treasurer for two semesters and as President in her last semester.
She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education in 2002 and after student teaching at Buckeye Union High School (her alma mater), she was offered a job teaching music and theatre. Since then, she has taught band, choir, instrumental music, theatre, and guitar and has loved every moment of it. In 2006, she received a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Phoenix.
Because music is her passion and has added so much to her own life, Sharnell is now eager to teach more people in the area to love music as much as she does. She is comfortable teaching just about every instrument - flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, guitar, and piano, just to name a few.
In addition to teaching, she still practices and performs on a regular basis - at home, in the public schools, and as the coordinator for a praise team at a local church (she's does lead and backup vocals and also plays the keyboard). She writes music and plays flute, guitar and keyboard whenever she gets the chance.
Sharnell enjoys teaching students of all ages and abilities - from 10 year old beginners to high school students wanting extra coaching and adults that have always wanted to play an instrument but never learned. Described by former and current students and by her peers as patient, kind, encouraging, and enthusiastic about helping others succeed, she is especially eager to reach students in the west valley (Tonopah, Buckeye, Avondale, Litchfield, Goodyear, etc.) in an effort to help build up music education in the area.
Helping elementary students learn the skills necessary for playing in a high school band...helping high school music students in preparing for college auditions or simply to improve their playing ability...teaching adults who have never played an instrument or haven't played for years and want to get back into it.
