I started playing trumpet at the age of 11, and was fortunate to have some excellent instruction from the beginning.  My first teacher, Don Neau was himself a student of Vincent Chicowicz, a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  He gave me all the basics to develop a proper approach to playing a brass instrument.  After performing in all the school ensembles ( including orchestra, big band , concert band and brass quintet) I joined some community bands and had my first experience with "touring" on a trip to Mexico at age 17.  With my interest in music developing along with my ability, I sought out other teachers and was fortunate to study with the great Renold Schilke all through high school.  He taught me that " The Sky is the Limit" and gave me valuable information that I can pass onto future students.  After graduating High School I joined the U.S. Air Force Band and continued searching out knowledge by studying with Carmine Caruso in New York and "Doc" Reinhart in Philadelphia.  The knowledge I acquired from these legendary brass instructors is the basis for my approach to teaching and performing and this continues today as I have most recently studied with Uan Rasey the great MGM lead trumpet player.

On leaving the U.S. Air Force Band I attended the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire.

My professional performing career includes backing Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, Rosemary Clooney, Kenny Rogers, Barry White, Perry Como.  And groups including The Temptations, The 4 Aces, The 4 Tops and The Moody Blues.

Broadway Touring shows such as : 42nd Street, Fiddler on the Roof and the Sound of Music.

I also toured on the road with The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, The Guy Lombardo Orcherstra.  And a short stint with The Glen Miller Band.

My approach to teaching is thorough involvement.  I believe the students need  proper examples in hearing what the music they are trying to master should sound like, therefore I strive to let them hear that and remain extremely supportive and patient throughout the learning process.

I can help students interpret all styles of music as I have performed in every musical setting from symphony orchestra  to rock bands.

I tend to focus on sound and the major "fuel" for a great sound is Air!  I teach correct breathing techniques and support.  Hey, did you know that playing a brass instrument can actually make you smarter? !!  For thousands of years people have used deep breathing exercises, (yoga) to improve oxygen supply to the brain and calm the mind!

By using this method it gives the student a better understanding of how to get the most out of a brass instrument.

It is also my aim to introduce students to some of the great brass players of the past and present, by suggesting listening material and some relevant historical and musical background.

Whether the student needs help to play the high notes in the band,  just got braces or wants to understand different styles and phrasing, I have the expertise of over 20 years of teaching and 40 years of playing.
