"Julie works really well with my 13 year old daughter. She keeps the lessons moving and keeps..."I started taking piano lessons at the age of 7 and have continued playing for the last 17 years. I began teaching piano lessons my freshman year of high school and continued teaching until I graduated, (approximately 4 years).
Also during my high school years, I regularly accompanied junior high and elementary school choirs. I began working as a church pianist when I was 15 and left the position when I went away to college.
I earned a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Speech and a minor in Music from Hillsdale College in May 2006. During my college years I regularly accompanied both instrumentalists and vocalists. I recently settled in Grand Rapids to pursue a career in broadcasting, and I am looking forward to teaching once again.
I start my lessons by allowing my students to warm up and ask any questions they may have about the previous week's material.
We then move onto scales and play/discuss last week's songs. Once a student has successfully passed a lesson, we move on!
I encourage all of my students to bring music that they WANT to learn how to play. Once the basic technique has been learned, we can move outside of the standard teaching material to work on different pieces.
I encourage all of my students to practice regularly during the week and most importantly to HAVE FUN learning!
