Guitarist, Composer and Teacher
Greg began studying classical guitar at the age of 14 with Dr. Kevin Vigil, in Fairfax, Virginia. He has since continued his classical guitar education from Dr. Robert Trent at Radford University and Claire Callahan at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, where he acquired his Bachelors degree in Classical Guitar Performance. Greg partook in post-baccalaureate work at the University of Kentucky while studying with guitarist Andrew Leonard. He was recently accepted into the graduate program at Denver University’s Lamont School of Music to study with renowned classical guitarist, Ricardo Iznaola.
Greg’s background includes 15 years of composition, classical, fingerstyle and rock guitar experience, and he has recorded multiple albums with various groups in a wide variety of styles. Greg tours Colorado performing with his band, Allegaeon, and continues to record and perform acoustic, progressive rock and Celtic folk music with his wife, Tamara Bustamante, a pianist and contemporary vocalist on the music faculty at Pikeville College in Kentucky.
Greg has extensive teaching experience that includes students of all ages and guitar instruction in a number of styles. He began teaching privately in Fairfax, VA in 1998 and has maintained a successful private studio since. In the year 2000, Greg began teaching privately in Cincinnati Ohio. He offered instruction in electric bass, electric guitar, classical guitar and acoustic guitar. In 2002, while maintaining this studio in Cincinnati, Greg joined the faculty at the Music Institute of Lexington, in Lexington, Kentucky. It was soon after this that Greg gained his certification in the Suzuki Guitar Method at the Chicago Suzuki Institute and began offering lessons using the Suzuki, as well as traditional, guitar method.
I tailor your lessons to you. Whatever type of music you are interested in, that is what we will focus on. I like split lessons up into 2 sections, technique and repertoire. Technique contains the building blocks that everyone must learn to accomplish their particular set of goals, no matter the style you choose to pursue. In the second half of the lesson I like to focus on the particular style the student has in mind and how they can apply the technical portion of their lesson style.
For younger students, I like to incorporate games into their lesson. They have lots of fun, and learn to play guitar at the same time and usually can't wait for their next lesson.
I am Suzuki certified, and I have a BM in Guitar Performance from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. I perform and teach various styles of guitar music, from classical, to Michael Hedges fingerstyle acoustic, to rock and metal.
