I've been playing and teaching for 45 years, while I don't have a degree in music, I have studied with some of the best players in the country, and have worked as a musician for most of my life. I have an extensive knowledge of music theory, reading, and ear training. I play almost everyday, I believe that learning is an on going journey. Music is endless...
I mostly use the Hal Leonard books for beginners. But as I stated, I tailor my lessons to the students musical goals. Some people don't want to learn how to read music, some do..One woman I taught, who sang in church wanted to accompanie herself on the guitar. I taught her about 25 chords and that was all she wanted..I am not stict, my goal is to see the smile on your face when you master a song you've been longing to play...Assuming the student practices regularily after 3 to 6 months the student should be able to play some of their favorite songs. I encourage my students to learn how to read music, but also to learn music by ear, nothing will bond you to your instrument quicker than by figuring out songs by ear..Nothing is more satisfying than learnig a song by ear. Music comes from inside you, the closer you get to your instrument, the sooner what you hear in your head will manifest automatically through your instrument. This is the place of joy that music provides...
