I graduated from the University of Michigan last spring with a bachelor of music degree in choral music education. I studied classical voice there for four years. I am in the middle of a master of music degree at Western Michigan University in jazz voice performance. I also have studied piano privately for roughly 15 years. I have taught private piano and voice lessons sporadically throughout my education to students as young as nine and to adults as well. I also have a strong background in music theory.

Ultimately, I believe students of music should enjoy lessons. They should not be a chore, and that is why I work very hard to ensure that my students are playing/singing/learning things that interest them. For piano lessons, I always encourage playing by ear as well as learning to sight read. It is important to set some goals when beginning lessons and that way, we will have something to work towards. I believe these goals should be realistic but also a challenge. It is possible to focus on repertoire, sight reading and playing by ear. I will work with my students to determine what will fit their needs best. For voice lessons, we will also set some goals that may consist of getting ready for an audition, solidifying vocal technique, learning repertoire, studying jazz vocal styles, or improvisation. Again, I want lessons to be as useful as possible and so before we begin, we'll have to sit down and talk about what you would like to accomplish.
