About Me

Brian C. (b. 1980)

Born in Berkeley, California, he has played piano since age five and composed since age eleven. He studied  piano with Machiko Kobialka, Seongmin Nam, and Jeanne Stark-Iochmans. Also, he has played for piano masterclasses with Yakov Kasman, William Wellborn, and Adam Wibrowski.

Brian graduated from the preparatory division of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and earned a B.A. in music from the University of California at Berkeley. In 2001, he won the collegiate division of the Twenty-First International Bartók-Prokofiev-Kabalevsky piano competition. He played Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto with the U.C. Berkeley orchestra in 2002. In 2008, he graduated from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University with a M.M. in Composition, and received Peabody's Gustav Klemm award for exemplary work in composition.

He has worked with children in the San Francisco Girls Chorus, the Spindrift School of Performing Arts, and the Piedmont Boys Choir.

Lesson Details

For younger students I prefer a more methodical lesson plan (such as Faber and Faber,) and as the students progress I take a more individual approach. Pianists should try out a variety of music from the different periods of Classical music, but I also believe they should stick to what they like to play. I can teach the standard practice for Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern music. I prefer students who practice between lessons, so that I can help them progress, although part of being a teacher is encouraging students to practice.
