Lisa has enjoyed studying, teaching, and performing music for over 10 years. She grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan where she resides today. She reaps the benefits of staying her home town such as personal connections to lots of other successful musicians, teachers, and performers in the area. She starting playing clarinet at the age of 11 and soon after began teaching. She truly believes that behind every great player is a great teacher. She takes great pride in her own work as a performer to continue to grow and understand how to be the most effective teacher. She received her Bachelor's of Music Performance from the University of Michigan in 2007. While in school, she studied with Deborah Chodacki and William King and performed in hundreds of concerts, musicals, chamber and solo recitals. She has also gained a significant amount of wisdom and respect for all fine arts through her 6 summers at Interlochen Arts Camp, as a camper first and then as a counselor and member of the administrative team of the High School Girls Division. Her summers at Interlochen, groomed her compassion and ability to connect with people from all different background who share a love for the fine arts. Lisa is currently expanding her artistic involvement as a ballroom dance instructor and competitor. When she's not playing or teaching music or dance she enjoys spending time in the beautiful summer sunshine!
My teaching style has developed over many years of teaching students of all ages and ability levels. What I have found to be most effective is finding what each student loves about music or the clarinet and using that passion to make lessons fun and progressive. I take great care in making real connections with my students so that I can make their clarinet lessons not only about clarinet but about understanding how to truly express through the instrument. I play on the strengths of very motivated students and strive to inspire less motivated students. The curriculum that I've developed is based on connecting body and sound. I spend plenty of time on fundamentals but my main focus is on repertoire. I like to have several performance opportunities for my students to give them goals and keep their learning focused.
